Tanzania, located on the East coast of Africa, has a cuisine that's been influenced by several cultures and flavours.
The most common meals from the Tanzanian include all the local plants and fruits: rice, Wheat, corn, beans, cabbage, various nuts, bananas, mangos, pineapple, and coconut, which is also consumed as milk. Meat is not so frequent, although Chicken is consumed in many styles with rice or the traditional ugali, and in the coastal areas, people prefer to eat fish with rice. Added to these, duck meat is considered a delicacy and it is only served on special occasions. In general, the Tanzanian cuisine is representative of the African ones, especially for the Eastern regions of Africa: bananas as starch for many meals, fruit drinks, citrus juices, cloves, cinnamons, roasted fish, spicy and curried meals, Wheat, corn, rice and various kinds of homemade slices of bread.
Pilau is a simple yet elegant dish that is typically served during special occasions such as Christmas, New Year, and weddings. However, it can also be found in local restaurants throughout Tanzania. This meal consists of a mix of meat, rice, Irish potatoes, and spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, and curry. Also, save room as Pilau usually comes with a side salad made with chopped-up chili peppers, onions, and tomatoes. This dish originally found its popularity in West India but has made its way into the coastal areas of Tanzania.
In Tanzania, the staple foods are ugali, cooked banana, or rice. Ugali is consumed by the majority of Tanzanians and is made from cassava, maize, sorghum, and millet flours, either singly or mixed.
The most common fruits in Tanzania are bananas, apples, papaya, coconut, and sweet potato. They are also often served cooked as a garnish for meat and fish. A spice that is used a lot is pepper. Pepper cake is one of its specialties. It contains minced beef, butter, onion, olive oil, Curcuma, nutmeg, and three varieties of pepper.
